In December, 2023, I took a family trip to visit my home state of Nebraska. I brought my Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field (portable synth, sampler, drum machine and multi-tracker) and sampled my environment, creating daily songs with the content I found. From airplane turbulence, swinging doors, guitars plunked in a music store and much more, these sounds were the basis for each song.

Whenever I had down-time; before bed, in the morning, or on the plane, I would choose a sample, start a new reel on the OP-1, and finish the song in that small session. The result is a collection of 10 songs called “Abstractions of the Sandhills and Great Plains”. It was written and recorded on United Airlines flight 578 from Seattle to Omaha, United Airlines flight 2103 from Omaha to Seattle, Super 8 and Holiday Inn hotels in Fremont, Nebraska, and the Travelodge in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. It was mastered in the Recovery Room after the trip was complete.

My goal with this album was to create an ambient based collection of songs on the OP-1 that captured the vibe of the trip, as well as using actual sounds found on the journey to execute the compositions. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed making it.
